IGNIS launches I-Flex, the project that will transform the electricity system through flexibility
IGNIS Energía has been selected by the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) and the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE) to lead one of the five pilot projects approved within Spain’s first regulatory sandbox for the energy sector. The chosen project, I-Flex, marks a key step forward in the innovation of the electricity system, focusing on the active role of energy demand.
Thanks to the vision and commitment of the IGNIS team, I-Flex will serve as a testbed to demonstrate how demand-side flexibility can benefit all stakeholders in the system. Its main objectives include reducing the costs of system balancing services, increasing the reliability of the electricity grid, and improving the integration of renewable energy sources — all with a direct impact on participants’ electricity bills.
I-Flex will also work to eliminate regulatory barriers that currently hinder the participation of demand-side resources, storage, and distributed generation in balancing markets. In doing so, it will foster a more dynamic, competitive, and efficient environment, aligned with the country’s decarbonization and energy transition goals.
The project was officially presented by Santiago Bordiu, CEO of IGNIS Energía, during the MITECO event on Regulatory Innovation and New Business Models. In his presentation, he highlighted I-Flex’s potential to transform the current energy model and generate tangible savings for participating industries.
