The Generalitat Valenciana and IGNIS sign an MOU to promote the Castellón Green Ammonia and Hydrogen Project
Today Antonio Sieira, CEO of IGNIS together with Carlos Mazón, President of the Generalitat of Valencia, the Mayoress of Castellón City Council and the President of the Port Authority have signed the memorandum of understanding showing the commitment to develop a project for the processing and storage of green Hydrogen and Ammonia from renewable sources that the company plans to develop in Castelló de la Plana.
The project, distributed in three phases, plans to produce up to 800,000 tonnes/year of Green Ammonia, which will be used mainly for the decarbonisation of industrial consumption in Europe. The project will involve an investment of more than 1,400 million euros in the three phases of the project and the construction of the complete project in its three phases will be completed around the year 2031. In addition, it is expected to create 100 direct jobs necessary for the operation of the plant and around 1,200 indirect jobs.
The plant’s production unit, where hydrogen will be generated and transformed into ammonia, is expected to be located on land adjacent to the Port of Castellón, while the storage of green ammonia will be located in the port facilities, as it is expected to be sold to international markets by sea.
This project based on new energy vectors will avoid the emission into the atmosphere of more than 2 million tonnes of CO2 and will bring with it multiple environmental, business, economic and social benefits, acting as a driving force and generating a value-added chain in a strategic sector such as renewable energies in the Valencian Community, Spain and Europe. In this regard, Carlos Mazón pointed out that this initiative “consolidates Castellón’s strategic role as a national benchmark as a hub for green energy”, while contributing to the objective of “energy sovereignty that we are seeking in the Valencian Community to generate the energy we consume and contribute to decarbonisation and sustainability”.
