IGNIS Energía becomes the first independent power company to participate in Portugal’s balancing services

IGNIS Energía, part of the Spanish IGNIS group and a leading company in asset representation and participation in balancing services with renewables in Spain, has made history in Portugal. On Tuesday, February 4, IGNIS Energía became the first independent aggregator[1] authorized to participate in Portugal’s balancing services—and to do so with renewable power plants.

As a pioneer in renewable participation in balancing services across Europe and the leading independent power company in secondary regulation (aFRR) in Spain, IGNIS Energía has now achieved the milestone of being the first company to actively participate in Portugal’s balancing services with renewable energy assets. The company’s goal is to optimize renewable generation, enhance competitiveness, and improve the integration of renewable plants into electrical systems.

To achieve this milestone, IGNIS Energía has worked hand in hand with Portugal’s system operator, REN, over the past months. This collaboration will help optimize the value of these assets in electricity markets and increase competition in the Portuguese system, ultimately benefiting consumers by lowering electricity costs.

These advantages were presented by IGNIS Energía at REN’s workshop, “Mercado de Serviços de Sistemas e os Desafios da Integração da Produção Renovável”, which took place on Tuesday, February 18.

This achievement is part of IGNIS Energía’s ambitious expansion plan for renewable asset representation in Portugal, which aims to reach over 1 GW of renewable assets under representation by the end of 2025.

The company’s growth has been exponential since it began its representation activity in the Spanish electricity market in 2019, expanding from 500 MW to over 8,000 MW across various technologies in both Spain and Portugal over the past five years. IGNIS Energía is a key player in Spain’s flexibility markets, having pioneered renewable participation in balancing services across Europe and becoming the leading independent company in secondary regulation (aFRR) in Spain.

José Ramón Arechederra, Director of Energy Management at IGNIS, highlights that the company is “excited to continue helping our clients optimize their assets in energy markets while contributing to integrating more renewables into electrical systems, enhancing competitiveness, and ultimately reducing electricity costs for consumers.”

Meanwhile, Santiago Bordiu, CEO of IGNIS Energía, states: “At IGNIS Energía, we are thrilled to be an active part of Portugal’s energy transition, collaborating with generators, consumers, and the system operator to create a more flexible and competitive electricity system.”

[1]“Independent aggregator” is the company that enables the aggregation of different small customers, including consumers and self-consumers, to participate in electricity markets.
